My intentional goals

by Jeremy Vaught

You would think that all goals are intentional. But you would be wrong, I think.

That being said, I’m not going to wax philosophical about the intentionality of goals, in this post anyway.

I decided that I’m going to lay out my goals. This is part of the reason of starting this blog. And by ‘this’ I mean lay out, plan, and accomplish my goals.

Goals fit into a few categories.

  • Spiritual
  • Relational
  • Financial
  • Professional
  • Physical

What I’m writing right now is just off the top of my head. I’m going to clarify all this more later. But I want to get it down. Get it out there. An important aspect is reaching goals is to tell others. So here goes.

Spiritual

I’m working out how exactly to put together some quantifiable goals. For right now, I’ll say that I’m a Christian, just a regular ‘ol Bible believing Christian. For me the quantifiable goal is to daily have my quiet time. If you don’t know what that is, well, I guess it’s a Christian thing. heh.

Relational

I’m currently divorced. Have been since 2005. I’ve had some girlfriends since then, but none right now. In fact, I am trying to shore of some other areas of my life before I do. Until then, a significant other is not a goal.

I do have kids though. Two of my own and a bonus son. Right now I’m not able to spend any time with them because their mother is blocking me. So that’s a very important goal. Get through the court process to see my kids on a regular basis.

That’s my immediate family. I have one sister who has a family. I want to see her more. I have both of my parents, each with their own spouse. I want to see them more. So I need to make a goal to accomplish those things. Stay tuned.

Financial

If you are like me, which many of you are, the economy has done a number on your finances. I’ve literally run out of money on a couple of occasions in the last few years. But I’m very fortunate right now to have a great client with a one year project, as well as working at a part-time job that provides great benefits for myself and my kids.

Very basic goal here is to make enough money to pay for insurance on my own, as well as create a surplus of income to pay off my debt, including back child support, that I incurred while under-employed.

Professional

This one is obviously, usually, ties closely to the financial goals above. I use my profession to finance my life. A very few don’t require that, but I’m going to assume that most of you do. So in order to, as I state above, “make enough money,” that can be read, “gain more clients.” This isn’t specifically true, I’ll lay out some other plans I have to create income for myself by creating passive income, and putting myself in a position to make more from the same work I do now.

Physical

This is an easy one. Lose weight. It is more quantifiable than that however. I am currently 250 pounds. I am pretty certain I would be in fantastic shape were I 210 pounds. That is my goal. I’ll be talking about this one more as I will all of my goals. But I plan on doing this with a crazy formula I’ve worked up. Like I said, I’ll be getting into it more, but the core of the plan is to eat less and exercise more. I only say it is crazy because everyone makes losing weight such a mystery and there are 6 gazillion books out there to prove it, and so many of them are complicated. I’m going to make it easy.

[A couple of points on the categories. These are the basic buckets I think in terms of when thinking of what makes of up. I'm not sure I'm sold on the word 'physical' but it ends in an 'al'. Health or personal might be more descriptive. But I also wonder if I should have a mental/intellectual/emotional aspect of these goals buckets. For example, if I want to read a book, does it fit into my current categories? It could if it's a book about one of those categories, heh. But what if it's a Dean Koontz book. Could I can that mental/intellectual/emotional? This needs more thinking/research and possibly your ideas.]

So that’s the deal. My categories and my basic overview. Comments? I’d of course love to hear them.

E njoyed the blog. Always like to know what others are thinking. Sounds like Jeremy has a plan for his life and is working toward his goals. A son a mother could be proud of.
